Jerry & Colleen (Swanson) Longstrom's genealogy page.

Greetings, I have this page on this research site so others can see the names of 
Jerry & Colleens relatives to be able to compare, and possibly locate relatives.

Jerry & Colleen (Swanson) Longstrom both have ancestors from Sweden.
  They have many relatives now living in Sweden, Norway & the USA. 

Jerry's relatives are from the Bullaren area in Göteborg Bohus län,
and most are from the Mo & Naverstad parishes.

Colleen's relatives are from the Mellerud area, in Älvsborg län,
and most are from the Jårn, Bolstad, & Brålanda  parishes.

Jerry's grandfather, Gustaf Långström/Longstrom came to the U.S. in 1893. He went to the state of Minnesota and farmed near Tracy.  He met Emelie Anderson, (Härlunda parish, Kronoberg län) the sister of his uncle Otto Holms wife.  They were married, had four children, Agnes, Clarence Elizabeth and Adolph. Gustaf farmed around the Tracy area all his life and eventually  retired in Tracy.  Agnes, Clarence, Elizabeth & Adolph all married, and there are many descendants from them living in the U.S.
Gustaf had two brothers and 3 sisters. One of the brothers, Carl Johan also came to Minnesota, He was a painter and never married. His other brother Axel moved to Norway as a young man, and there are many descendants from him today in Norway. The three sisters, Augusta, Anna Hedvig and Mathilda stayed in Sweden. Augusta never married, Anna Hedvig married and had two children, Ivar Hilding and Erland. There are descendants from Ivar & Erland in Sweden and the U.S. today. Mathilda had a son named Harry.  Harry lived on Tveten, in  Bullaren, Bohus län, was a painter and never married.

 I am looking for these relatives who came to the USA;

Samuel Edward LÅNGSTRÖM, Born February 16, 1834 in Naverstad parish, Bohus län Sweden, emigrated in 1854?

I am looking for anybody named "Samuel Edward"  that was
born in 1834 and came to the U.S.A.

Hannibal LÅNGSTRÖM, born April 21, 1858 in Naverstad parish,  Bohus län Sweden, emigrated in 1882.     A letter said he had a job with a painter.

I am now looking for a man named "Hannibal"  that was born in 1858 and was
a painter in the U.S.A.!!!

Magnus Michael LÅNGSTRÖM, born March 30, 1890 in Naverstad parish, Bohus län Sweden,  emigrated in 1906 from Göteborg Sweden to Silverton Colorado, was working in the mines there and then disappeared in apx. 1909.  Some reports say he was married & may have changed his name to ARMSTRONG??
I just recently found Magnus in the 1910 census living in a boarding home in Thermopolis Wyoming.  I will now look in Wyoming records for more info. I can not find him in the 1920 census.

I am now looking for anyone from Sweden that came to the U.S. and was born in 1890
that has the name "Magnus."

ALL of my relatives named LÅNGSTRÖM, that have come to the USA
              have changed their name to LONGSTROM.               

In 1980, after a relative named Harry Långström died in Tveten, Bohuslän Sweden, all the Longstroms in the USA were led to believe that he was the last living Longstrom relative in Sweden.  In 1997, after I did some research and found out that most of the Långström families in Sweden in the early 1800's had from six to ten children, I thought there may be some relatives living there. :) Well, there are quite a number (apx. 200) of Långströms living in all parts of Sweden & Norway.     In 1810, in Bullaren, Bohuslän Sweden, while living on a farm called Sör Säm (South Sam) Olof Olsson Åhs changed his name to Olof Olsson Långström. (he lived beside a long stream (Lång-ström)  I have been told by relatives that he was a tall man and may have changed his name because of that. Since that time all of the descendants have kept the name Långström, instead of the son-dotter addition to the father's first name. About 90 years more of the name Långström.

With the Långström name staying in the family for so long, it has helped speed up the time to find Swedish relatives.

But, the most  help came from another genealogist in the family named Erland Långström.  Erland was born in Sweden on September 28, 1880 and died there on October 19, 1948.    He was a Tullöverinspektör (customs inspector) in Göteborg.  He became interested in genealogy and started writing about the Långström relatives and farms. He also started saving old newspapers, and information from those newspapers, are being put on micro film in Sweden today. Erland did many genealogies on the people of Göteborg.  He has helped preserve a lot of history about the Långströms and the people of Göteborg.  The city of Göteborg was so grateful for his help, they have named a street after him.

In doing  genealogy research on the Långströms today from Arizona, I am getting help from Långströms in Sweden, Norway and the US.   But the most help has come from Kusin  Laila Falk who lives in Göteborg!     Tack så mycket,   Laila!

Colleens great grandfather, Erik Magnus Svensson left Sweden to come to America on July 8th 1872.  He went to Rockford Illinois, and lived there a short time. He changed his name to Swanson, got married to Elizabeth Levine, and then moved to Coon Creek Minnesota.  He farmed in MN. the rest of his life.  Erik's father, Sven Engelbrektsson and his wife Kerstin Eriksdotter, and their children came to Rockford Illinois. Their oldest son Eric Magnus Svensson was already there. The other children were Carl Johan, August, & Albin and their sister Josefine.  All of the family changed their name to Swenson. Carl Johan was very successful in the furniture business in Rockford Illinois. (Skandia furniture) August was a painter in Rockford and a member of the city council.  Albin died at the age of 17  from inflammation of the bowels. He was working at a furniture factory. Josefine married E. A. Norrman and was a housewife.  Of the Rockford Swensons, Carl Johan was the only one to have any children. His children were Carl E. & Thorborg. Carl E. married Eva Garver & was an inventor and had patents for the universal joint for automobiles as well as many other patents. Carl & Eva did not have any children.  Thorborg never married, and was a school teacher. Research has shown that Carl E. and Eva and Thorborg traveled extensively and that Thorborg went to Sweden a number of times. All of the Swenson's of Rockford were very active in the Trinity Lutheran church.

We are still looking for some Engelbrektsson relatives in Sweden.
They were from the Mellerud area in Älvsborgs län.

Sven Engelbrektsson had 3 sisters and 3 brothers.  The three sisters, Kristina Engelbrektsdotter b: Dec. 19, 1823 and one of the twins Eva stayed in Sweden. (we think)  One of his brothers Johannes b: Dec. 13, 1835 died at two years of age, and his parents Engelbrekt Svensson and Lisa Bengstdotter named their next son Johannes. He was born Feb. 2, 1839.  Johannes as far as we know stayed in Sweden. Sven's  other brother Jan Jacob Engelbrektsson moved to Bernadotte Minnesota, farmed and raised a son named Erik Magnus Engelbrektsson. The family changed their name to Engelbert. Erik married Signild Svensson, and later when Signild passed away married Frida Karlsdotter.   He had children from both marriages and there are many relatives living in the US at this time.  

  I have info that Erick M. Jacobson was a farm laborer and was living in the city of Kennedy, Tegner Township Kittson County Minnesota, in the 1900 census. He was living with a relative, Erick Magnus Engelbert.

I have just found Maja Lisa Jacobsdotter.  She married August Morshare while living close to the area
of Lafayette Minnesota.  More Later!!

One of the twins Eva Engelbrektsdotter, moved around to farms a lot. I have not traced her to the end.  It is a matter of going further which I will do soon. She is 47 and not married at the last farm.

The other twin Maria Engelbrektsdotter, married Johannes Ericksson. They had a son named Carl David. On April 19, 1867 they moved to the USA.
We have found the Erickson family and relatives in Winthrop Minnesota.  They had two more children, Christina and Daniel. They went to the Bernadotte church.  There are living relatives in Minnesota and Arizona and other states.   I will put more info on here as I get it organized.
